February 4th: Optics

Week 2 - On-demand with George Asimellis, PhD, MBA, Professor of Vision Science and head of the IRB committee

Preparing for the optics portion of the NBEO® can feel challenging, but with the right approach, it becomes manageable and predictable.

In this PowerPrep session, we’ll guide you through the optics concepts that appear most frequently on the exam, helping you understand not just what to study—but how to apply it on test day. We’ll break down high-yield topics including low vision magnifiers, ophthalmic prism effects, and lens power and shape, with a clear focus on how these concepts are tested on the NBEO®. Through structured explanations and exam-style examples, you’ll learn how to approach calculations, interpret questions efficiently, and avoid common pitfalls.

This session also emphasizes practical test-taking strategies specific to optics, including time management, formula selection, and decision-making under pressure. Whether optics is a weaker area or you’re looking to refine your approach, this PowerPrep session will help you move forward with greater clarity and  confidence.

By the end of the session, you’ll have a stronger framework for tackling NBEO® optics questions and a clearer plan for continued preparation.

In this PowerPrep session, we’ll help you focus on the ocular disease concepts that matter most for exam success and show you how to approach them with confidence.

We’ll review high-yield ocular disease topics commonly tested on the NBEO®, emphasizing disease recognition, key clinical features, and decision-making patterns used in exam questions. Through guided examples and exam-style scenarios, you’ll learn how to efficiently differentiate conditions, prioritize findings, and select the best answer—without getting lost in unnecessary details.
This session also includes targeted test-taking strategies for ocular disease questions, including how to manage lengthy stems, recognize “classic” presentations, and avoid common traps. Whether ocular disease feels like a strength or a challenge, this PowerPrep session will help you refine your approach and improve consistency.
